Book Selection

Materials selected for the library are determined by teacher request, student request, and book reviews from professional journals; items are used to support the curriculum and foster a culture and love of reading. All ordered materials are approved by the site administrator.

Specific titles that may be controversial or senstive are read and reviewed by three staff members for age appropriateness. Staff members for the review process may include administration, teachers, and library staff. Reviews of these materials are kept on file in the school site library. (See Library Review Form)

Selection tools used are: publisher catalogs, AR Book Find, Goodreads, Follett Titlewave, School Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews, and Barnes & Noble.

Check Out Policies

Students are encouraged to check out materials during their scheduled time to the library or during recess and lunch breaks. Students who need new materials during class time may check out items with the teacher’s permission at any time the library staff is on campus.

Teachers who need materials from the library must check out materials with the library staff. Materials may not be removed without the library staff’s knowledge. Library staff can pull books for special units of study in a classroom. Instructional staff need to plan in advance when materials are needed.

Lost or Damaged Items

Students are responsible for the care of textbooks and library materials and are responsible for the cost of replacement when an items is damaged or lost.

Lost books/material may limit a child’s check out privileges for one school year. Limited check out privileges include the ability to only check out one book at a time.
