Procedural Safeguards and Parents' Rights
Parents of children with disabilities, ages three through twenty-one, have important educational rights under a law called the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). These rights are called procedural safeguards.
If you ever have questions about your child’s education or about your rights, there are people in the District and in the Antelope Valley SELPA who can help. If you have a concern, the best first step is to talk with your child’s teacher or school administrator. Most of the time, open conversations like this can quickly solve problems and help keep communication strong.
Parents are an important part of their child’s education team. You have the right to participate in any IEP meetings where decisions are made about your child’s special education services. This includes meetings about evaluations, eligibility, IEP goals, educational placement, and anything related to your child’s right to a free and appropriate public education (FAPE).
