• Welcome Tigers and Parents:

I would like to welcome all of you to the 2020 - 2021 school year! Last year was a great success and I look forward to meeting our incoming 6th graders, as well as seeing all of our great returning students. I want you to know that the entire staff of NVMS has worked hard to prepare for this school year, especially with our distance learning model opening, and we are excited to have you as part of our Tiger family! I’d like to share a few thoughts about our school planner, and how it is your tool for success.

Students will be issued a planner this school year that will provide students with a consistent place and method for recording assignments, setting goals, and keeping track of successes. Teachers will take time to teach you how to use this planner to maximize your educational program and we do expect you to keep your planner with you at all times.

Recording your assignments in your planner each period of every day will allow you to stay on top of your work; just like in the real world, being prepared is the result of knowing what is due and when. At the beginning of each period, take the first few moments to complete your planner. When you get home each night, check your planner for what needs to be completed that evening. In addition, put the deadline of long-term assignments in your planner as well. I suggest you even break those assignments into ‘chunks’ with intermediate deadlines.

We have included a place for you to set and monitor your goals. As Abraham Lincoln said, “A goal properly set is halfway reached.” Setting goals for each quarter and the year are important steps to achieving your goals. Be thoughtful as you set your goals and celebrate the attainment of those goals. Your parents, teachers, and administrators will be happy to help you meet your goals.

Also, included in the planner is a PowerSchool Information Letter that includes the Parent Portal Website. Remember, participation in all extra-curricular activities requires a minimum 2.0 GPA and at least a “C” citizenship grade. The PowerSchool forms will be used for students to record their username and password and provides information about what and how to use PowerSchool. Within the first week of school students will receive the password information from their homeroom teacher. Remember, frequent monitoring of students’ grades on PowerSchool is key to academic success and helping students achieve high GPAs. You can click on the child’s grade, per class, and see all test and assignment scores. This will also help track any missing assignments and/or low scores.

Finally, we encourage parents to be involved in the Planner as much as possible. We encourage parents to initial your child’s planner nightly.

Please note that in the planner we have included a Supply List, format for AVID Focused Note-taking, and the Dress Code.

Tigers, this is going to be an amazing year!
