Find It Fast

  • Mariposa Computer Science Magnet School (MCSMS) has partnered with Code To The Future (CTTF), the nation’s leading Computer Science program for Magnet Schools, to close the science gap by giving all students the opportunity to develop coding skills as part of the daily curriculum. Code To The Future is America’s first Comprehensive Solution for Computer Science Immersion — making schools more fun while preparing kids for the future.

Why Computer Science? The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment of computer and information technology occupations will grow 13 percent from 2016 to 2026, faster than the average for all occupations. Our students need these skills to be competitive in the future job market. Additionally, over 90% of parents indicate that they want more Computer Science Education opportunities for their children, yet only 6% of Superintendents perceive this demand. Lancaster School District has set Mariposa Computer Science Magnet School apart from other schools.

What do students do at MCSMS? Teaching methods integrate both Programming and Game Design, giving students a well–rounded understanding of how to utilize technology to create. This is a paradigm shift for kids, transitioning them from being just players to being creators. Cycle 1 introduces students to block coding through the Scratch programming language developed by MIT. Cycle 2 combines block coding skills with LEGOs and LEGO Robotics. In Cycle 3, grades TK-K further develop their Scratch coding skills, while grades 1st-6th learn the behind the scenes action with actual coding of players in Minecraft (as opposed to just playing) with a focus on block coding and JavaScript. Students at MCSMS use their coding and robotics skills to create projects across the curriculum. The possibilities are endless!

Our program teaches skills needed in any job: problem solving, creative thinking, perseverance, patience, organization and collaboration through coding in the classroom.

  • Raptor is Coming!

The Lancaster School District & Mariposa Computer Science Magnet School consider the safety of our students and staff a top priority. This year, we have implemented a new visitor management system to ensure that individuals visiting and interacting on our campuses are properly identified and signed in. Across the District, the new Raptor Visitor Management System has replaced the paper visitor sign-in sheets. As part of this new system, everyone visiting our school is required to present valid photo identification to the office staff. Please review the following attachments for particulars. • A Visit from a Chief Scientist at NASA, Al Bowers

    Al Bowers

On November 16th, students at Mariposa Computer Science Magnet School welcomed a special guest speaker, Mr. Al Bowers, a Chief Scientist at NASA. He shared his story of overcoming challenges in his life, as well as his educational background.  He also explained current projects that are happening at NASA. The students were excited to learn about these projects and to touch an actual controller that had been on Apollo 15 when it landed on the moon! Mr. Bowers was receptive to questions and our students had many great ones for him. Thank you so much, Mr. Bowers, for visiting Mariposa Computer Science Magnet School!
