Why Computer Science? The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment of computer and information technology occupations will grow 13 percent from 2016 to 2026, faster than the average for all occupations. Our students need these skills to be competitive in the future job market. Additionally, over 90% of parents indicate that they want more Computer Science Education opportunities for their children, yet only 6% of Superintendents perceive this demand. Lancaster School District has set Mariposa Computer Science Magnet School apart from other schools.

What do students do at MCSMS? Teaching methods integrate both Programming and Game Design, giving students a well–rounded understanding of how to utilize technology to create. This is a paradigm shift for kids, transitioning them from being just players to being creators. Cycle 1 introduces students to block coding through the Scratch programming language developed by MIT. Cycle 2 combines block coding skills with LEGOs and LEGO Robotics. In Cycle 3, grades TK-K further develop their Scratch coding skills, while grades 1st-6th learn the behind the scenes action with actual coding of players in Minecraft (as opposed to just playing) with a focus on block coding and JavaScript. Students at MCSMS use their coding and robotics skills to create projects across the curriculum. The possibilities are endless!

Where can I learn more? Contact us to learn how your child can get started on a learning skills they can use in a promising career path. Not interested in a computer coding job? No problem! Our program teaches skills needed in any job: problem solving, creative thinking, perseverance, patience, organization and collaboration through coding in the classroom.

    In Person Learning

    Hello Lancaster Families,

We are excited to hear that you have chosen to have your student to return to in-person instruction at one of our schools. The safety of all students and staff is very important to everyone in the Lancaster School District. To assist in keeping everyone safe the District has adopted the use of ParentLocker, our new Health Screening App.

You will soon be receiving an activation email from inviting you to activate your account in ParentLocker. Your activation email will contain a code for the initial setup of your account. It will contain instructions for downloading the app for both Android and iOS. If you opt not to use the app, you will be able to login via a computer at

You will be required to complete a health screening survey and take the temperature for each of your students before they are allowed to enter campus. We encourage you to complete the ParentLocker survey information before leaving home. If you do not have a smartphone or computer, a ParentLocker Kiosk will be available at the front entrance to the school.

We know that completing a health survey will take a few extra minutes each morning, but the safety of all children and staff is our top priority. Thank you for doing your part in keeping our schools safe!
